Knit

I like to think of the Knit Stitch as the foundation of knitting, and the first heritage that any knitter in your life may have shown you. If you’ve had a go at knitting before, this is probably what you’ve had a try at. A bit like riding a bike or driving a car, at first it can seem like you have far too many things going on to ever take control of, but with a little practise, you WILL get there!

Here are my tips on how to do a knit stitch, but don’t feel you have to stick with my method – there are a lot of great tutorials on You Tube and other social media which can provide you with some back up or that ‘lightbulb’ moment if you need one.

Ready to start?

Pick up your knitting. The empty needle always starts in your right hand. The full needle starts in your left. The points of the needles always face away from you, and you will hold the needles at a comfortable horizontal angle.

Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle.

Using your right hand, wrap the yarn around the back of the right hand needle, anti-clockwise. Then bring the yarn towards you, between the fork between both needles and return the yarn to the starting point.

Tilt the tip of the right hand needle towards you and pull though that yarn you’ve just wrapped around it. Once the tip of the right needle is pointing straight towards your face, and you’re pulling through the wrapped yarn into a loop, push the original stitch off the end of your left hand needle tip.

Congratulations, you have done a knit stitch!

Keep going, until you have no stitches left to knit into on your left hand needle. Congratulations, you have done a whole ‘row’ of knitting!

Now swap hands with your needles, ready to begin another row. The empty needle always starts in your right hand. The full needle starts in your left. The points of the needles always face away from you, and you will hold the needles at a comfortable horizontal angle. Pop the ball of yarn somewhere down low to your right hand side – maybe on the chair next to you.
